Awards Grants to State Programs

PHOENIX—In June, the Arizona Humanities Council awarded $48,678 to support eleven programs in organizations across the state. Support for these grants have been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The grant recipients and their programs are:

  • AHS Northern Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society, FLAGSTAFF. "The History and Tradition of Indigent Care in Flagstaff (PCD)." Two presentations and a panel/public forum in September 2008 on the history and current status of indigent health care in Flagstaff. Project Director: Tom Carpenter, 928/523-8927. Total grant award: $975.
  • Arizona State Library, Carnegie Center, PHOENIX. "Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame Exhibit and Web Site Update (WTP)." An interpretive and structural update to both the exhibit and the Web site, to occur prior to the November 2008 induction ceremony. Project Director: Sarah Weber, 602/926-3368. Total grant award: $3,265.
  • ASU West Department of Integrative Studies, GLENDALE. "Civil Discourse Through Public Debate: Religious Diversity (PCD)." A public forum in Fall 2008 that explores religious diversity in the contemporary world. Project Director: Owen Anderson, 602/543-6027. Total grant award: $813.
  • Circle of Light Navajo Educational Project, GALLUP. "Our Fathers, Our Grandfathers, Our Heroes...The Navajo Code Talkers of World War II (WTP)." A traveling exhibition starting in January 2009 that tells the stories of young Navajo Marines and their unique contributions to the Pacific campaigns. Project Director: Michele Pracy, 505/726-8030. Total grant award: $4,525.
  • Film Arts Foundation, SAN FRANCISCO. "Ambos Nogales (WTP)." Screenings and discussions in late 2008/early 2009 of a documentary film that focuses on local citizens from both sides whose cultural and economic ties continue despite the international border. Project Director: Luisa Greenfield, 510/527-5249. Total grant award: $6,025.
  • GRIC Huhugam Heritage Center, SACATON. "Huhugam Heritage Center Great House Overlook Exhibit (WTP)." A permanent exhibit to open in July 2009 that interprets the surrounding landscape from the tribal perspective and using multiple disciplines. Project Director: Nancy Mahaney, 520/796-3500 x222. Total grant award: $6,000.
  • Hualapai Tribe Department of Cultural Resources, PEACH SPRINGS. "125 Years of Reservationhood: A Hualapai Retrospective (WTP; PCD)." A lecture-and-discussion series in late 2008/early 2009 that examines tribal history and its impact on contemporary social concerns. Project Director: Loretta Jackson Kelly, 928/769 -2223. Total grant award: $3,000.
  • Mesa Historical Museum, MESA. "Play Ball: The Cactus League Experience (WTP)." A multi-media exhibition opening in early 2009 that examines spring training in Arizona from the 1920s to the present. Project Director: Lisa Anderson, 480/835-7358. Total grant award: $6,025.
  • Museum of Northern Arizona, FLAGSTAFF. "Heritage Insights for 2008 Hopi and Navajo Festivals of Arts and Culture (WTP)." Humanities presentations for MNA’s Hopi and Navajo festivals in summer 2008 designed to enhance understanding between nonnative and Native Americans. Project Director: Robert Breunig, 928/774-5213 x201. Total grant award: $6,025.
  • Phoenix Art Museum, PHOENIX. "A Tradition Redefined: Modern & Contemporary Chinese Painting, ChuTsing Li Collection." A symposium in September 2008 to accompany an exhibit that examines the context of social and political change in China and Taiwan during the 20th century. Project Director: Janet Baker, 602/307-2049. Total grant award: $6,000.
  • UofA Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language and Literacy, TUCSON. "Conference on Developing and Assessing Intercultural Competence ." A teacher institute in October 2008 that provides educators with historical and cultural content in order to enhance intercultural competence and instruction. Project Director: Linda Waugh, 520/626-8071. Total grant award: $6,025.
