SUMMARY:Hydrology and Water Resources 101 - Bisbee
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 22 \n5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nCopper Queen Library \n6 Main St\, Bisbee\, AZ 85603 \nHydrology and Water Resources 101 with Victoria Hermosilla \nAs we move into the 21st century\, our water resources and management will need to become more adaptive under the pressures of population growth and less predictable weather patterns.  This interactive and discussion-based presentation covers the water cycle\, surface water and groundwater basics with considerations of water usage as it relates water & energy and water & food.  Victoria will also provide access to groundwater models and other informational displays. \nVictoria Hermosilla was born on a small ranch in southern California with five wells that frequently went dry\, and discussions of rain\, drought\, and everything in between. This constant water awareness continued when she moved to Arizona in 2006.  She earned an associate’s of science at Cochise Community College then a bachelor’s degree in Hydrogeology from Northern Arizona University. She began working for Clear Creek Associates in 2012 as a field hydrologist where the majority of her work was with the mines and their groundwater contamination challenges.  When she wasn’t working in the field\, she spent some time volunteering with Watershed Management Group assisting fellow citizens install passive and active rainwater harvesting features. She was inspired to come back to school for a master’s degree after hearing Dr. Tom Meixner speak at the 2015 Arizona Hydrological Symposium. Her initial interest in water stems from her experiences and geography; her continued interest in water stems from not only a desire to have job security\, but also to help her community and her country. Her goal is to one day lead the Arizona Department of Water Resources and contribute to the solutions of future. \n

Many cultures have sprung up on its banks\, and millions of people depend on the river today—whether they know it or not. Gregory McNamee\, author of the prizewinning book Gila: The Life and Death of an American River\, presents a biography of this vital resource\, drawing on Native American stories\, pioneer memoirs\, the writings of modern naturalists such as Aldo Leopold and Edward Abbey\, and other sources. Each workshop outlines a different approach to manage our watershed and to educate our community members on water conservation. Part 2 will focus on the history\, cultural relevance and science of monsoon planting by explaining the use of particular water slopes\, basins\, and swells along the south west side of the site which will help with the conservation of water. \n

DESCRIPTION:Even Words Not Spoken Break Silence: Writing to Reclaim\, Heal & Transform \n4:00 p.m. Workshop \n5:30 p.m. Performance\nCopper Queen Library\n6 Main St\, Bisbee\, AZ 85603\n\nThe month of April shares a powerful duality\, recognized as National Poetry Month\, April is also a time to raise awareness around sexual assault and violence. It is fitting that the month used to honor artistic expression of word also shares space with the work to raise and uplift voices of survivors. Join spoken word artist\, Leilani Clark\, as she shares her journey using writing as a method to heal from trauma\, validate her truth and break through silence. Strategies will be explored to transition written word to spoken word and build confidence in stage performance and personal story telling. \nLeilani Clark is a native-born Tucsonan of Native (Diné/Santa Clara) and African American heritage. She is a community organizer and activist who has been involved in the Immigrant Rights Movement and fight to preserve cultural education in public AZ schools before\, during and after the 2010 signing of anti-Migrant bill\, SB 1070\, and anti-Ethnic Studies bill\, HB 2281. Leilani’s political analysis further broadened around gender equality after surviving sexual assault and an oppressive rape culture of silence and victim-blaming. In 2013 Leilani began dabbling in the art of spoken word to confront silence around gender violence in movement spaces and in 2014 she relocated to Las Vegas\, NV where she further explored the art of slam poetry. Leilani fired up the local Sin City open-mic scene\, regularly performing poetry\, music and previously co-hosting Las Vegas’s longest running weekly open-mic\, “The Human Experience.” The winds recently brought her back to her hometown and she’s been actively using the art of slam poetry to convey messages of cultural pride\, social justice\, healing and empowerment.
