The Gila River flows about 30 miles to the south through Winkelman. The Salt River and Roosevelt Lake\, a large reservoir created by Roosevelt Dam\, lie north of the communities. Miami and Globe rely for their own water supply on deep wells that tap into groundwater from the Cutter Basin. The Tonto National Forest surrounds the area on three sides. U.S. Highway 60 connects the towns\, which are about four miles apart. \nWater/Ways is sponsored by the Salt River Project\, Nestlé Waters North America\, the American Slavic Association\, and Chaos RX Optics.

DESCRIPTION:Burton Barr Central Library \nSecond Floor\, College Depot Auditorium \nAZ H20 + Art with Jim Ballinger \nHoover Dam is an iconic marvel of American engineering.  Created to manage the floodwaters of the Colorado River\, the dam continues to affect Arizonans’ lives daily.  But the Hoover dam is rarely thought of as a significant work of art.  Since artists first visited our region\, water has been a subject for their work\, ranging from rivers and lakes to dams\, agriculture and recreation.  This program will explore works of art created over the past 150 years\, and invite participants to discuss the various ways water is systemic to life in the Arizona deserts\, mountains and the Colorado Plateau. \nJim Ballinger is uniquely qualified to lead the conversation\, having served as the director of the Phoenix Art Museum for 33 years. During his tenure\, the Phoenix Art Museum presented nearly 500 exhibits\, 50 of which Ballinger personally organized. Ballinger has a keen interest in the intersection of art and water\, and is a nationally respected arts advocate. \n

DESCRIPTION:Read more about Miami-Globe on the Water/Ways website. \nDates: September 22 – November 4\, 2018 \nAddress: 150 N Plaza Circle\, Miami\, Arizona 85539-1629 \nExhibit hours: Thursdays-Saturdays: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, Sundays: 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. \nThe mission of Bullion Plaza is “dedicated to preserving and presenting the culturally diverse history\, the human experience\, as well as exploring the natural environment unique to the Globe-Miami region of Arizona.” The building was known as the Bullion Plaza School in Gila County and is on the National Register of Historic Places. \nMiami is located in east-central Arizona\, and it is closely tied with the nearby City of Globe. The “twin” municipalities share a newspaper\, a chamber of commerce\, and a common cultural identity. Although the mining operations that support the economy depend on large amounts of water\, there are no rivers or lakes in the area. The Gila River flows about 30 miles to the south through Winkelman. The Salt River and Roosevelt Lake\, a large reservoir created by Roosevelt Dam\, lie north of the communities. Miami and Globe rely for their own water supply on deep wells that tap into groundwater from the Cutter Basin. The Tonto National Forest surrounds the area on three sides. U.S. Highway 60 connects the towns\, which are about four miles apart. \nWater/Ways is sponsored by the Salt River Project\, Nestlé Waters North America\, the American Slavic Association\, and Chaos RX Optics.

DESCRIPTION:Not If We Learn from the Past… \nWhiskey’s for drinking\, and water’s for fighting. The old quip about the West seems truer than ever today\, as growth and climate change threaten  our water supplies. The Colorado River is dwindling\, rural wells are going dry\, and rivers could vanish. But history shows that Arizonans can solve water problems without a gunfight. The late Jack Pfister was a leader in reaching agreements on divisive water issues\, from groundwater pumping to tribal water rights. What can Arizonans learn from Jack’s example to build consensus on the tough issues that we face now and in the future? Join Arizona Humanities and writer Kathleen Ingley for an evening to learn\, discuss\, and reflect on how one person can change the course of public events. \nKathleen Ingley is a freelance writer who specializes in the state’s pivotal issues. She was a reporter and editorial writer at the Arizona Republic\, where her work  has included award-winning series on state trust land\, the potential of solar energy\, the threat of invasive plants\, the increasing impact of the urban heat island and the challenge of growth. She is the author of Water\, Power and Persuasion: How Jack Pfister Helped Shape Modern Arizona. \n
