SUMMARY:"Talking Code with a Secret Weapon: Navajo Code Talkers Speak" with Laura Tohe
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION \nDuring WWII a group of young Navajo men enlisted in the Marines unaware that they would develop a secret code against the Japanese military. This select group of Code Talkers devised a Navajo language code that was accurate\, quick\, never broken\, and saved many American lives. Excerpts from live interviews with the Code Talkers tell their stories before\, during\, and after the war that reflect their resiliency and their service to the U.S.\, a country that once tried to erase Navajo identity and language in the schools. Without fanfare the Code Talkers returned home to continued poverty and lack of opportunity and yet persevered. They overcame obstacles that helped change the Navajo Nation and their communities. Over twenty years passed after their discharge before Code Talkers were honored for their service by U.S. Presidents and the Navajo Nation. \nThis program is cohosted by the Chandler Public Library – Basha Branch. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nLaura Tohe is Diné. She is Sleepy Rock people clan born for the Bitter Water people clan and is the daughter of a Navajo Code Talker. A librettist and an award-winning poet\, she has written three books of poetry\, edited two books\, and written an oral history book on the Navajo Code Talkers. Her commissioned libretto\, Enemy Slayer\, A Navajo Oratorio\, world premiered for the Phoenix Symphony and her latest libretto\, Nahasdzaan in the Glittering World was performed in France in 2019 and 2021. Among her awards are the 2020 Academy of American Poetry Fellowship; 2019 American Indian Festival of Writers Award; and the Arizona Book Association’s Glyph Award for Best Poetry. Tohe is Professor Emerita with Distinction from Arizona State University and is the current Navajo Nation Poet Laureate.

SUMMARY:FRANK Talks: Is Incarceration the Best Approach to Address Criminal Behavior? - Chandler
DESCRIPTION:Is Incarceration the Best Approach to Address Criminal Behavior? \nJulian Kunnie\, University of Arizona\, Religious Studies/Classics/Africana Studies/Indigenous/Globalization Studies \nIn 2017\, 47\,604 people were either incarcerated or under some form of criminal justice supervision in the state of Arizona\, with 119 adults/54 minors on death row\,  and 2\,485 veterans serving prison time. The U.S. represents 5% of the world’s population\, yet holds 25% of the world’s prisoners.  We incarcerate people for non-violent and substance abuse-related crimes.  Private-for-profit prisons in Arizona and the country are a lucrative industry\, viewed by some as contributing to the rise in incarceration.  What economic\, political and social factors play a role in today’s mass incarceration?  Do poverty\, race and class contribute to the disproportionate imprisonment of the poor and people of color? Does incarceration rehabilitate people who are incarcerated? Is imprisonment the best solution to address criminal behavior?  Join us for this FRANK Talk on the impact of mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:FRANK Talks: The Impact of Fake News in the Real World - Chandler
DESCRIPTION:“Fake News”: The Impact of Fake News in the Real World\nJamie Bowen\, Arizona State University\, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication \nAlthough not new\, our awareness and use of the term “fake news” has risen in prominence. In general “fake news” is journalism that consists of deliberate misinformation\, news whose main purpose is to distort “the truth for emotional persuasion\, seeking to drive action.”  More recently it has become a catch-all term used to discredit stories\, and in the political arena to influence the political process and elections in the U.S and abroad.  What is the impact of “fake news”?  How does “fake news” affect community conversations and civic engagement? How do we balance the benefits of free speech against the burden of propaganda? Join us for a lively FRANK Talk about “fake news\,” free speech and journalism today.

SUMMARY:FRANK Talks: Parenting & Conversations on Reproductive Health - Chandler
DESCRIPTION:Parenting & Conversations on Reproductive Health\nDr. Kathy Nakagawa\, Arizona State University\, School of Social Transformation \nOur roles as parents encompass caring for our children through all aspects of development\, but we often falter when it comes to talking about sex and sexuality. For our daughters\, in particular\, having healthy attitudes about sex can promote equitable relationships\, foster more positive body images\, and nurture thoughtful choices regarding intimacy.  Cultural and social values in our country can directly impact conversations about sex and intimacy. What happens when parents and children can’t talk about sex and sexuality? Who has access to reliable and accurate information about sex\, sexuality and reproduction\, and who does not? How can parents have better conversations with their children about sexuality? Join us for a FRANK Talk about parenting\, sexuality and reproductive health.

SUMMARY:FRANK Talks: Immigrants and the American Dream - Chandler
DESCRIPTION:Immigrants and the American Dream: We the People Today and Tomorrow\nDr. T.J. Davis\, Arizona State University\, School of Historical\, Philosophical and Religious Studies \nThe United States of America has long touted itself as a land of immigrants and has grown phenomenally from migration since its beginnings in an ever expanding global economy. Yet the source and substance of immigration have been topics of continuous debate. How do domestic conditions\, regional competitions\, geopolitics\, and foreign policy affect the discourse about who could and should become an American?  How do immigrants become Americans?  How do immigrants affect American vitality?   Join us for a Frank Talk to ponder the question\, what does it mean to be an American.

SUMMARY:FRANK Talks: Local Democracy and Politics in Education
DESCRIPTION:Local Democracy and Politics in Education: Does it help or hinder student achievement? \nDr. Carrie Sampson\, Arizona State University\, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College \nIn 2008\, The Atlantic published an article entitled “First\, Kill All the School Boards: A modest proposal to fix the schools.” The article emphasized school boards’ failure to lead school districts in creating systems that foster student success. On one hand\, school board members might not have the necessary experience to provide effective school district leadership. On the other hand\, as elected or appointed officials\, school boards represent local communities and are one of the closest democratic links to education. Join us as the FRANK talk will explore the role of local communities and democracy in education. How do school boards and other initiatives to involve local communities in education help or hinder student achievement? What role should community members play in education? In what ways do politics impact student opportunities to succeed?

SUMMARY:Arizona Songbirds: the life stories of Marty Robbins and Linda Ronstadt - Chandler
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Songbirds: The life stories of Marty Robbins and Linda Ronstadt\nThese two Arizonans were blessed with beautiful and unforgettable singing voices and had more hits than the Arizona Diamondbacks. Songs like El Paso\, Big Iron\, Yellow Roses for Robbins and Different Drum\, Blue Bayou and Skylark for Ronstadt. Marty was a little bit country and Linda was a little bit rock and roll. Both of them grew up in Arizona and put Arizona musical influences on our national cultural map. Robbins was an early lover of NASCAR and helped to solidify and popularize Western music. Ronstadt  was an early female rocker who helped bring back the Big Band standards.  This presentation will explore and reveal the lives and careers of these two popular music giants. \nSteve Renzi\, a University of Arizona graduate with a degree in history\, believes that every generation must learn about who and what came before them or else the lessons learned are lost. As a writer and photographer with a teacher’s certificate in secondary education\, Renzi is always searching for new ways of exploring our history. He has written and been published in over 200 magazine and newspaper articles and is currently a writing and photography teacher\, as well as a basketball coach.  Although he derives great satisfaction from his professional pursuits\, his proudest moment was the birth of his twin sons. \n
