SUMMARY:The Wild West Fiddle Project: Arizona's Hidden Soundscape
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Kate Rose and Armand Ramirez for a fun\, all-ages\, interactive performance that uncovers Arizona’s rich blended heritage through traditional folk music and dance. Featuring live fiddle and guitar music and storytelling\, this experience reveals how pioneer musicians\, whose roots spanned old worlds and new terrains\, integrated their traditions with those of neighboring communities. Connection with the land shaped these emerging traditions\, where Celtic melodies and Hispanic rhythms interweave seamlessly. We will hear revived tunes showing how cultures converged to create a unique sound\, reminding us to connect with the beauty of our state’s open skies\, deep canyons\, and vast forests. \n  \nDr. Kate Rose is a Flagstaff-based fiddler\, researcher\, and tradition-bearer leading the Wild West Fiddle Project and directing the nonprofit Wild Steps. Having spent two years studying with fiddling farmers in County Clare\, Ireland\, Dr. Rose brings a deep sense of music as rooted in landscapes and the rhythms of rural life. Her research and unique performing style reveal and revive the cross-cultural music and dance traditions of the American Southwest. She suggests that when we go deep into our own roots\, they naturally intermingle with the deep roots of others’ traditions. Her talks\, which present history through true stories of Arizona musicians from our past\, are often accompanied by master rhythm expert Armand Ramirez (guitar)\, whose rootedness in Hispanic traditions adds historical depth and musical magic. He is also a passionate researcher of local history and his own family’s rooted Arizona connections\, bringing a multidisciplinary approach to cultural storytelling and music.

SUMMARY:"The Colorado River and its Wonders: A Study in Water Use and Conservation" with Jim Turner
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION \nThe Colorado River is a critical source of the West’s water supply\, supporting 40 million people\, nearly 6 million acres of agriculture\, and tribes across seven states and portions of Mexico. At 1\,450 miles long the Colorado River is the sixth longest river in the United States. The river flows through seven states and covers 244\,000 square miles\, about 1/12th of the United States. Known for its dramatic canyons\, whitewater rapids\, and eleven U.S. National Parks\, the Colorado River and its tributaries are a vital source of water. An extensive system of dams\, reservoirs\, and aqueducts divert almost its flow for agricultural irrigation and urban water supply. Its large flow and steep gradient (10\,184 ft above sea level to 58 feet in the Mexicali Valley) are used to generate hydroelectric power to several western states and Nebraska. This presentation discusses the geology\, geography\, exploration\, national parks\, and the state of the river today with its natural beauty\, current difficulties\, and solutions. \nThis program is cohosted by the City of Surprise – Art & Culture. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nArizona Historical Society’s beloved historian\, Jim Turner\, has worked with more than seventy local history museums. He co-authored the 4th-grade textbook The Arizona Story\, and his pictorial history\, Arizona: Celebration of the Grand Canyon State\, was a 2012 Southwest Books of the Year selection. Turner moved to Tucson in 1951\, earned an MA in U.S. history in 1999\, and has been teaching Arizona history for 47 years. SUMMARY:"Authoring Home - Arizona's Indigenous and Chicano Literary History" with Oscar Mancinas
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION \nArizona is often thought of in the context of “The West\,” that is\, as a frontier that needed to be tamed and populated by settlers coming from the eastern and midwestern parts of the U.S. Literarily\, this has meant that many stories from and about Arizona center settlers and their relationships not only to the landscape but to the people who were already residing within that landscape when they arrived\, namely Indigenous and Mexican people. This presentation focuses on two early twentieth-century Arizona authors\, Refugio Savala (Yoeme-Mexican) and Mario Suárez (Chicano)\, and details how their respective literary works helped give voice to people not otherwise represented in literature. Ultimately\, though subtle\, Savala and Suárez’s early work persists in the ways they influenced future generations of Indigenous and Mexican-American authors and projects within Arizona. \nThis program is cohosted by the City of Surprise – Art & Culture. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nOscar Mancinas is a Rarámuri-Chicano educator\, poet\, author\, scholar\, and organizer. He was born and raised in Mesa’s Washington-Escobedo neighborhood—where his family has resided since the 1950s. Oscar’s books\, To Live and Die in El Valle and Des_____: Papeles\, Palabras\, & Poems from the Desert\, have gained recognition from the Border Regional Library Association Southwest Book Awards\, as well as the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards and the Mesa Book Festival. He recently completed his doctorate in Transborder Studies at Arizona State University; he teaches creative writing and literary studies at Northern Arizona University.

Patterson\, and Pastor Warren Stewart. \nThis program is cohosted by the City of Surprise – Art & Culture \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nAkua Duku Anokye is an Associate Professor of Africana Language\, Literature\, and Culture\, and Director of New College International Initiatives\, Office of Interdisciplinary Global Learning and Engagement (IGLE). Dr. Anokye is the past chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC)\, and currently Chief Reader for the College Board’s Advanced Placement English Language and Composition. SUMMARY:"Beyond the Kitsch: The Pervasive Spirit of our Indigenous Creative Community " with Nanibaa Beck
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION \nThroughout the Southwest\, tourists and locals encounter a range of Indigenous art\, from manufactured and imported cultural appropriations to fine art in galleries and museums. The state’s creative Indigenous communities are sometimes lost in what is popularly featured as Native American Art. In this presentation\, Diné jeweler Nanibaa Beck will highlight contemporary Native American Art\, focusing on eclectic indigenous creatives throughout Arizona and beyond. Beck draws examples from her friends\, family\, and extended kin to demonstrate the diversity of artistic talents\, mediums\, and philosophical approaches of Indigenous artists. The presentation will leave participants with a better appreciation for the range of Native American creativity the state has to offer. \nThis program is cohosted by the City of Surprise – Art & Culture. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nNanibaa Beck is a 2nd generation Diné (Navajo) jeweler. Since 2013\, her work reflects Native creative expressions and the growth of an Diné ‘Asdzaa (Navajo woman) as a designer and maker. Being intricately connected to the creative process at an early age motivated Beck to become more knowledgeable about the multifaceted areas surrounding Native American Art. Her anthropology background includes work and fellowships with renown museums\, including the Heard Museum\, the National Museum of the American Indian\, the Peabody Essex Museum and the Field Museum.

SUMMARY:Early Western Songs and Singers - Surprise
DESCRIPTION:Whether or not you grew up when Western films competed favorably with the popular films of the day\, you will definitely want to take yourself back in time to hear the music that made cowboy legends out of the Sons of the Pioneers\, Roy Rogers\, Gene Autry\, Jimmy Wakely and so many other Western singers. Music Historian Erik Larson will ‘stir the campfire’ and feature a generous number of original Western recordings that were so much a part of the 1930s and 1940s. \nErik Larson earned a B. A. degree from San Diego State University in 1962 and served with Boys Clubs Of America (now Boys & Girls Clubs) for 30 years  as the director of five different Clubs throughout the Midwest and California. While in Aberdeen\, South Dakota and Des Moines\, Iowa he received a national awards for creating outreach programs designed to help youth from single parent or otherwise disadvantaged families. Eventually he was asked to join the National Staff as a management consultant to individual Club staffs and boards of directors. For nearly two decades\, he has been a volunteer docent at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff.

DESCRIPTION:From mammoth hunters and canal builders to Native Americans\, Hispanics\, Americans\, Irish\, Serbians\, and just about every nationality under the sun\, Arizona has always been a land of many cultures. And while the Earps and the Geronimo are world famous\, Arizona can also be proud of its unsung men and women and cooperative communities. Here we will share Arizona’s experiences from the famous to the little known\, from Native American ceremonies to mining booms\, cattle drives\, cotton harvests\, and religious settlements\, we will learn how Arizona evolved from a violent frontier to a just and civil society dedicated to its people’s welfare. \nBefore retiring from the Arizona Historical Society\, Jim Turner worked with more than 70 museums in every corner of the state. He is co-author of the 4th-grade textbook The Arizona Story\, and his pictorial history book\, Arizona: Celebration of the Grand Canyon State\, was a 2012 Southwest Books of the Year selection. Jim moved to Tucson in 1951\, earned a M.A. in U.S. history from the University of Arizona\, and has been researching and teaching Arizona history for more than 40 years. Jim is now an author/editor for Rio Nuevo Publishers\, author of The Mighty Colorado from the Glaciers of the Gulf (2016) and Crater Lake and Beyond (2017).

DESCRIPTION:Tyrone Power\, Andy Devine\,  Katy Jurado\, Steve McQueen and\, of course\, John Wayne. From the earliest days of film\, Arizona has been a setting and subject for hundreds of films. Some\, like Junior Bonner and Red River\, are considered classics\, others\, such as Billy Jack and Evolution\, surely less so. Some may even be classics in the making\, from Tombstone to Near Dark. In this entertaining talk\, Gregory McNamee\, a frequent contributor on film to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and former columnist for the Hollywood Reporter\, looks at the Grand Canyon State on the silver screen. \nGregory McNamee is a writer\, editor\, photographer\, and publisher. He is the author of forty books and of more than five thousand articles and other publications. He is a contributing editor to the Encyclopædia Britannica\, a research fellow at the Southwest Center of the University of Arizona\, and a lecturer in the Eller School of Management\, also at the University of Arizona. SUMMARY:Ghost Towns of the Second World War: Arizona’s Historic Military Sites - Surprise
DESCRIPTION:When America entered the Second World War\, Arizona’s sparse population and mild weather made it an ideal location for training facilities and prisoner of war camps.  By war’s end\, Arizona had trained more pilots than any other state\, hosted the country’s largest POW camp\, and was part of the largest military training grounds in history.  This presentation tells Arizona’s war-time role by focusing on the stories of those WWII sites in Arizona that still have significant remaining features from the war period.  Includes many photographs and first-hand accounts. \nErik Berg is an award-winning historian and writer with a special interest in the early twentieth century southwest.  Raised in Flagstaff\, and a graduate of the University of Arizona\, Berg has been exploring\, hiking\, and researching the southwest for over thirty years.  In addition to contributing to several books and numerous conferences\, his work has appeared in the Journal of Arizona History\, Arizona Highways\, Astronomy\, the Journal of the Society of Commercial Archaeology\, and Sedona Magazine.  A past-president of the Grand Canyon Historical Society\, Berg currently lives in Phoenix.

DESCRIPTION:Cowboys and Cowgirls: Icons of the American West\nFew symbols have been more durable than the American cowboy. This program will give an overview of this populist figure\, whose image was first defined by painters Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Also important to the story are brave cowgirls and the Mexican vaqueros. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show showcased mythic cowboy culture\, with singing cowboys\, pretty girls on horses\, and plenty of Indians in his internationally popular extravaganzas that for many defined the American West. Arizona’s contribution to this chronicle is significant\, and includes Lon Megargee (the state’s original cowboy artist). Contemporary artists continue to portray this tradition. \nBetsy Fahlman is Professor of Art History at Arizona State University. An authority on the art history of Arizona\, her books include New Deal Art in Arizona (2009) and The Cowboy’s Dream: The Mythic Life and Art of Lon Megargee (2002). She is the author of two essays in catalogues published in 2012 by the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff: “New Women\, Southwest Culture: Arizona’s Early Art Community” (in Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton: Artist and Advocate in Early Arizona) and “Making the Cultural Desert Bloom: Arizona’s Early Women Artists” (in Arizona’s Pioneering Women Artists: Impressions of the Grand Canyon State).

SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Martha Summerhayes - Surprise
DESCRIPTION:Martha Summerhayes was a refined New England woman who entered the Arizona Territory in 1874 as the young bride of an Army Lieutenant. Traveling in horrific conditions and dreadful heat\, she soon despised the wild and untamed land. She gave birth to the first anglo child born at Fort Apache where the native women took her under their care. Gradually\, Martha’s attitude towards the desert changed and she soon came to love the starry nights\, the clear air\, and the simplicity of its inhabitants. She wrote about her experiences in the classic book\, “Vanished Arizona”\, still in print since 1908. Ranney has a personal connection to the Summerhayes family\, which he shares in the lecture. \nWayne Ranney has lectured on all seven of the Earth’s continents. With a lifelong interest in the natural and earth sciences\, he specializes in making the fascinating story of our planet come alive for audience members. He is a retired professor of geology but still teaches an occasional course at Northern Arizona University. He is passionate about sharing his vast knowledge of earth history with others in an easy and informal style\, and is a well-respected author of numerous award-winning books and articles. He enjoys anything that allows him to to get outdoors with others to enjoy the varied and interesting landscapes of this beautiful world.
