SUMMARY:Arizona's Ark of Taste Foods with Chef Amber Sampson
DESCRIPTION:Chef and Cultural Anthropologist Amber Sampson brings you on a journey of taste around Arizona’s heritage food history. Sampson will expand on Arizona’s Ark of Taste\, a living catalog of foods facing extinction\, including the local\, heritage\, and native foods that are unique to Arizona’s food history. Come learn about favorites\, like White Sonora Wheat\, teapry beans\, and Ark of Taste foods like Black Sphinx dates\, cholla buds\, chilitipin pepper\, and more. In learning about Arizona’s food history\, the people\, producers\, communities\, and cultures behind each bite\, you can better support your local food community and create a more sustainable food system. \n  \nAmber Sampson explores the world through food as a trained professional Chef\, who also holds degrees in Cultural Anthropology\, Food Systems Sustainability\, and a Master’s in Gastronomy. She studied food and race at Harvard University\, brought ancient bread to life with fellow Anthropologists from Yale\, and was awarded the prestigious US Government’s Gilman Scholarship for archeological research with Arizona’s O’odham Nations. Sampson’s work brings present-day relevance to ancient meals\, people\, and cultures\, giving others a taste and connection to our delicious past\, revealing a more sustainable and understanding future. She sits on the Board of Directors for Slow Food Phoenix and was the Arizona representative for the Global Food Security Summit in Washington\, D.C.\, and Terra Madre in Italy in 2024. Sampson has worked for Boston University\, S’edav Va’aki Museum\, Arizona State University\, and the Arizona American Indian Tourism Association. Sampson was awarded the Arizona Humanities 50th anniversary climate conversations grant for a documentary on her food research.

SUMMARY:"Staying Human in the Artificial Intelligence Revolution" with Matthew Goodwin
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION \nBy most accounts\, the revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has only just begun. What is the current state of AI and what does it mean for humanity? This presentation will provide a general introduction to what AI currently can and cannot do. We will also explore some of the philosophical questions that AI raises. What are the ethical concerns about using AI? What about privacy concerns? What does AI mean for our jobs? Will we be threatened by a robot apocalypse? And what\, ultimately\, does it mean to be human in the age of AI? \nThis program is cohosted by the Mohave Community College – Bullhead City – Hargrove Library. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nMatthew has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and has taught environmental ethics\, media ethics\, and technology and human values at Northern Arizona University\, Coconino Community College\, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Matthew recently participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar on extending Aldo Leopold’s “Land Ethic.” He is co-founder of Sedona Philosophy\, which offers guided hikes and retreats in Sedona and northern Arizona.

SUMMARY:The Golden Age of Solar System Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Mankind has dreamed about and longed to explore space for ages. We are indeed fortunate to be living in this slice of time when we actually have the ability and technology to do it! This presentation will discuss the successes\, failures\, adventures\, and discoveries of the final frontier. \nDr. James Rice\, is an Astrogeologist with over 30 years research experience specializing in the exploration of the Solar System\, especially the Moon and Mars. His career includes working for NASA\, The Astrogeology Headquarters of the United States Geological Survey\, the Mars Spaceflight Facility (ASU)\, and the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (UA). He has a PhD from Arizona State University\, MS from the University of Louisiana and BS from the University of Alabama.Currently\, Rice is a Senior Scientist and Geology Team Leader on the NASA Mars Exploration Rover Project (Spirit and Opportunity). Rice trained and briefed NASA astronauts in geology and Mars exploration. He has been a leader and team member on numerous international geological field expeditions around the world including a 6 month long NASA/Russian expedition to Antarctica. This work included being a member of the SCUBA diving team to first investigate the perennially frozen lakes of eastern Antarctica. Rice served on numerous NASA Science Analysis Groups for manned missions back to the Moon and Mars. He received numerous NASA Moon and Mars Mission Achievement Awards and was inducted into the inaugural class of the United Space Camp Hall of Fame.

SUMMARY:Grand Foods of the Grand Canyon State: Traditional Foods of the Tribes of the Southwest - Bullhead City
DESCRIPTION:The ethnobotanical story of the Southwest begins with the plant knowledge the people have inherited from their ancestors who lived entirely off the land. The nutritional values of many wild foods are only recently gaining attention of western dietitians.  These foods however\, have long been known by local Tribes for their nutritional and medicinal value.  So called “superfoods” are those foods which contain high amounts of phytonutrients and antioxidants.  Such foods can in some cases reduce the risk of chronic disease.  This talk will examine several key traditional foods utilized by Southwestern Tribes – foods that have been utilized by the Tribal people for centuries. \nCarrie Cannon is a member of the Kiowa tribe of Oklahoma and is also of Oglala Lakota descent. She has a B.S. in Wildlife Biology\, and an M.S. in Resource Management. She began working for the Hualapai Tribe of Peach Springs\, Arizona in 2005 where she began the creation of an intergenerational ethnobotany program for the Hualapai community.  She is currently employed as an Ethnobotanist for the Hualapai Department of Cultural Resources. She administers a number of projects promoting the intergenerational teaching of Hualapai ethnobotanical knowledge working towards preservation and revitalization to ensure tribal ethnobotanical knowledge persists as a living practice and tradition.

The corn in the tortilla comes from Mexico\, the cheese from the Sahara\, the lettuce from Egypt\, the onion from Syria\, the tomatoes from South America\, the chicken from Indochina\, the beef from the steppes of Eurasia. The foods of Arizona speak to the many cultures\, native and newcomer\, that make up our state. Join Gregory McNamee\, the author of Moveable Feasts: The History\, Science\, and Lore of Food\, in exploring these many traditions. A slide show accompanies this talk and that the host organization must provide a laptop\, projector\, and remote. \nGregory McNamee is a writer\, editor\, photographer\, and publisher. He is the author of forty books and of more than five thousand articles and other publications.
