Authenticity contrasts with stereotype. It is regrettable that much of the public image of the borderland between Mexico and the U.S. is shaped by persistent stereotypes rather than complex understanding. When policy solutions are tailored to these stereotypes they almost always fall short of their objectives in the real borderland. The notion of authentic place, therefore, contrasts with the notion of stereotyped place. With the tools of cultural geography at hand we will interrogate the stereotypes of the border in order to deepen our relationship to the borderland as the rich, nuanced, and authentic place it is.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Scott Warren lives in Ajo, Arizona where he pieces together work as an academic geographer. His research, teaching, and experience is at the intersection of people and place in the broad Mexico-U.S. borderland. The landscapes of Arizona and the continental southwest inspire my work.
