El DÃa de los Niños, El DÃa de los Libros: An impactful day of listening, learning, and sharing
Nationally known authors, poets and performers will come together with 500 Arizona middle and high school students from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., May 12, in the Memorial Union on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus to observe El DÃa de los Niños, El DÃa de los Libros (Children’s Day, Book Day). The event is part of a national celebration of young people, literacy and cultural heritage. Agua Fria High School in Avondale received an AH Project Grant for this program which assists students in developing fundamental life skills, as well as an appreciation for their personal cultural heritages.
This is the fourth annual El DÃa event at ASU. Local students will enjoy performances by poets, novelists, playwrights, dancers, artists and actors – including emcee Alberto RÃos, Gary Soto, Xavier Garza, Myrlin Hepworth, and Aprilynne Pike, Tom Leveen, Bill Konigsberg and Janette Rallison. Following the performances, local professors and teachers will conduct workshops in which students can create and perform their own works. All students in attendance receive a book and an opportunity to meet that book’s author for an autograph.
